About the Artist

Joan Hopkins

Art by Joan Hopkins

Hopkins' formative years were spent in England's West Country, now she finds the inspiration of her art in Canada with all that surrounds her. She came to Canada in 1981 and opened her present studio in 1984 where she instills her love of painting to her youth and adult students. Hopkins' paintings are a reflection of a combination of stimuli; how she was feeling at the time, the way she saw her subject physically or imaginatively, or if the result was to be abstract, semi-abstract, impressionist or realist.

"Nostalgia plays a large part in my art, images from my earlier days superimpose themselves on the art I see everywhere I look. I feel that strong connection to the natural beauty of the scenery around me. Even areas of decay offer small pieces of wonder. I have never lost the sense of excitement from seeing the way a painting develops as it flows from my brush or knife."
