No stranger to the Cornwall art scene, having exhibited her works at the Weave Shed and other locations, Jephcott is pleased to be involved in Art on the Street. "I definitely believe in Art on the Street. It's how the Vankleek Hill May Art Show got started- based on the philosophy of bringing art to the people. By having art in a location other than a gallery, people are less intimidated, and they're not pressured to be buying from the gallery. Art expands your mind, your horizons, and shows you a different way of looking at things. I consider that if [through your art] you can get someone to look at the world in a different way, you're a success."
Susan Jephcott is curator of Three Owls Studio & Gallery in Vankleek Hill, ON. Jephcott originally from Hudson, Quebec studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Montreal and at the Jamaica School of Arts and Crafts in Kingston, Jamaica. Her works have been shown in the West Indies, France, USA, and Canada in galleries and reside in many private collections. She is one of the originators of the Vankleek May Art Show which has been running since 1982. Jephcott is presently preparing for a solo exhibition next summer in France, near the city of Grasse in the Alp-Maritime.
About Art in Le Village
Perhaps better known for its efforts in revitalizing the Le Village area and its award-winning collaborative efforts with community partnerships, Groupe Renaissance Group is now addressing another component of its agenda of social and economic development. In 1998, the Delcan Report -based upon feedback from community consultations- identified the need and desire to improve community services and activities.
"This is just the first step in addressing that need. Next there might be a street arts festival, theatre project... We're just starting," said Renaissance spokesperson G.H. Chuck Charlebois.
